Dax Michaels: The core of my EXPERIENCE with Life Coaching didn't come until July 25, 1984. It was on that day, a week before my 22nd birthday, that I was hit by a car while bicycling and in that accident I had sustained:
1) Severe cerebral concussion and contusion
2) Right temporal bone fracture
3) Right basilar skull fracture
4) Left transverse humerus fracture, midshaft
5) Left transverse comminuted tibial and fibular fracture
6) Soft tissue infection, multiple sites, organisms, enterobacter cloacae, Enterobacter aerogenes, group D enterococcus, Klebsiells, oxytoca; and Bacillus subtilis
7) Bacteremia Organism, Salmonella enteritidis
8) Right retroperitoneal hematoma
9) Right acromioclavicular joint separation
10) Multiple abrasions and contusions
11) Aspiration bronchitis, organisms, Staph aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes and Pseudomonas putida
I was in a coma for 5 days, critical condition for 4 days and intensive care for 3 weeks. I was finally discharged from the last hospital on December 31, 1984. Once discharged and 2 weeks later after receiving permission from my orthopedic surgeon that I could begin to walk again, I started on a personal quest to again be in the shape I was in on July 24, 1984.But the road to recovery was filled with a great deal of obstacles and barriers. There were times when I actually wished that the accident of 1984 had been fatal so as to avoid all this pain!
Before the accident my life was on track! I was an honor student headed for graduate school so as to get an MBA in International Business and I was happy! I had my friends and life was good!
Suddenly my life was not on track and I seemed to be at ends trying to get it back on track. Sure, there were a great many people who were there to help but no one really knows what you are going through because they have not undergone something such as this! Although, even if they had, they might have evaluated the situation differently because they are NOT you!
What I hated most of all was the "oh you poor thing" or those who spoke with my mother about putting me in a "special facility"!!!
Then there were the therapists! Ah yes, the therapists!!! Listening to my exclamations of pain and injustice with their ever benevolent cassette recorders. Ready to replay my pain at their convenience
No one had ever sat down with me and asked:
"So, where do you really want to go with this!"
"The accident happened as do many things in life, now how are you going to move on from here?"
" Do you want to move on from here?"
" Are you comfortable in your so-called anguish and desolation?"
" Do you want to rely on the sympathy of others?"
" Do you want people to feel sorry for you?"
I had to fight that battle through all by myself and I did it and am still doing it!
I have found that one must keep moving! One must experience and one must live! To hold yourself back because you are afraid of failure or possible negative consequences is in itself a death sentence!
Now comes the question, "To what do I want to move towards and what should I move away from!"
This is how I came to the career of life coach! I found that I could use the lessons learned from my own ordeal to somehow help other people focus on a life goal and/or destination and then help them plot a course thereto.
