Pranayama is for the most part the conscious control of breath so as to achieve a calming of the mind and aid in obtaining an optimal level of health.

I'm sure many westerners can remember an old saying that was told to them when they relayed how they were just about to punch their boss right in his big mouth: "Take a deep breath and count to ten". Funny thing is, this did work! True to fact, this was in actuality a crude and primitive form of Pranayama.

Most of us let our breathing be controlled by our emotions when in truth we can induce a reverse relationship so that our emotions will be controlled by our breathing. Imagine the possibilities!!! Imagine that combined with Tantric Erotic Bodywork!!!

Pranayama is a Sanskrit term composed of two parts: prana (which means "life energy") and yama (which means the control and/or expansion thereof).

Pranayama is the control and/or expansion of one's own life energy through a series of appropriately chosen rhythmic breathing exercises and practices appropriately combined with select meditation techniques.

I would like to state that Pranayama breathing techniques have been practiced for thousands of years, so I believe that from a legal standpoint (as well as a practical one) that they are quite safe when performed in an orderly fashion. It has often dawnwed on me that this could in actuality be described as "choreographed breathing". Accept it as a given that when these breathing exercises are performed properly, the body relaxes, the mind becomes more calm, and the individual will find himself being better able to focus.

As any professionally trained opera singer will tell you, The benefits of breathing from the diaphragm do indeed support virtually all systems in the body. As a matter of fact, while doing it, It also gives a great massage to the heart and most major internal organs.

Let me note that breathing from the diaphragm stimulates proper blood circulation which in turn supports a better assimilation of nutrients from consumed foods, aids in their digestion, and yes even in the elimination of bodily waste.

Also given that the brain is the body's largest consumer of oxygen, it is important to maintain a continuous flow thereof to it, for without oxygen serious brain damage will result. This fact can be plainly evidenced in the practice of CPR where the first step is to check the person's breathing.

Seeing that It has been noted that the practice of Pranayama supplies additional oxygen to therefore allowing one to develop a higher functioning of the brain, logic would stipulate that this should allow for a development of greater mental facilities through expanding one's own life-energy.

Let it be written that Breathing from the diaphragm (in a clean air environment) should fully supply the body with the required oxygen while at the same time allowing for the full release of carbon dioxide.

This simply is the way it should be, so having clean air is of the utmost importance.

Simple Technique

Completely Exhale: allowing the abdominal area to be sucked in so as to release air from the lower lungs before collapsing the chest cavity thus releasing air from the upper lungs. When the abdominal area pulls in, this automatically lifts the diaphragm against the lower lungs, which releases air.

Fully Inhale: allowing the breath to first fill the lower lungs before filling that portion of the lungs in the upper chest cavity. By doing this properly one should note that the abdominal area will expand before the actual chest cavity.

Can you give me an example of how it is performed?

Upon birth one first begins to breath from the diaphragm. When the diaphragm, intercostal muscles, and abdominal muscles work in harmony, the breathing is more efficient. When these muscles are weak, the tendency toward shallow breathing takes place. The respiratory muscles are strengthened through correct breathing and movement.

Natural Breath (breathing from the diaphragm)

Breathing from the diaphragm is the most natural way to breathe; Upon birth one first begins to breath from the diaphragm. Then by the time one reaches adulthood, shallow breathing has become a "normal pattern" for many. This can often be attributed to stress, tension, unbalanced emotions, poor posture, unexercised musculature, and yes even poor diet. However, through my own personal experience the main cause of this is the fact that almost every breath we take is filled with some form of air pollution; car exhausts being the worst!

SO PLEASE PRACTICE THESE BREATHING TECHNIQUES IN A CLEAN AIR ENVIRONMENT!!!

Technique

Exhale, allowing the abdominal area to pull in to release the air. When the abdominal area pulls in, the diaphragm naturally lifts up against the lower lungs, which allows the air to release.

Inhale, allowing the breath to flow into the lower lungs. The abdominal area expands but allows the diaphragm to lower giving

A vital scientific and therapeutic aspect of yoga is Pranayama. Pranayama is the breathing process or the control of the motion of inhalation, exhalation and the retention of vital energy. By controlling Prana (life force), one can control all the forces of the universe, namely, gravity, magnetism, electricity and nerve currents.

During Pranayama inhalation (puraka) stimulates the system and fills the lungs with fresh air; retention (kumbhaka) raises the internal temperature and plays an important part in increasing the absorption of oxygen; exhalation (rechak) causes the diaphragm to return to the original position and air full of toxins and impurities is forced out by the contraction of inter-costal muscles. These are the main components of Pranayama which massage the abdominal muscles and tone up the working of various organs of the body. Due to the proper functions of these organs , vital energy flows to all the systems. The success of Pranayama depends on proper ratios being maintained between inhalation, exhalation and retention.

Inhaling is the first thing one does when entering the planet. Exhaling is the last thing done before leaving the planet. An average of 24,600 breaths are taken each day, approximately 15 breaths per minute. When fewer breaths per minute are taken in, more energy is felt because of correct breathing. The breath is inhaled deep into the lower lungs. Most people however are shallow breathers; they are usually only breathing into the smallest area of the lungs, the upper lungs. This is probably due both to the inherent laziness of modern man and the fact that our air is so polluted that if someone were in actuality to take a deep breath they would be worried that they inhaled too many toxins. This should be another indicator that the fuel burning engine has seen its end!

Breathing is the only function of the body that is both voluntarily and involuntarily performed. This means the breath is controlled by the sympathetic nervous system and by the parasympathetic nervous system. Breath control functions like a bridge taking one from the conscious to the subconscious and finally through the power of meditation from the subconscious to the super-conscious state.

Whether breathing practices are chosen to overcome stress, to strengthen the respiratory system, to increase energy, or to expand awareness, a wealth of benefits is found. The benefits that proclaim the transforming power of pranayama are too numerous to list. In just a short time of practice, one can claim the direct experience of being in the flow. When the breath flows, the mind, too, will feel the inner flow and meditation will be spontaneous. Life will be a breath of fresh air.

I hope that this clearly outlines the importance of clean air on this planet. We need clean air to live!!!! We can all do without cars and the like so as to keep that clean air!

Even after doing 20 seconds of "pranayamic" breathing, one begins to feel like a lotus blossom that is opening for the very first time. You feel as if a boulder has been lifted off your chest and you are again free to breath.

Interestingly enough, shallow breathing also contributes to the constriction of the arteries and a greater concentration of stress. You begin to take many short and shallow breaths much like an untrained runner attempting a 10K run.
