Our History
Career Press was founded in 1985 as a niche publisher of targeted career directories. Now, 20 years later, Career Press boasts an active, strong-selling backlist of nearly 300 titles spanning careers, personal finance, business management, study skills, and leisure pursuits. Our philosophy has remained constant since our founding: we publish the highest-quality books on topics most needed in the marketplace, written by established, credentialed, media-savvy professionals … and then promote and publicize them full force.
Career Press: "Enriching Your Life One Book at a Time"
At Career Press, we publish general non-fiction that addresses real, practical human needs. Our useful, accessible, "how-to" books reach a broad market of average Americans - people grappling with universal issues relating to job-hunting, career management, education, money, and personal goals.
www.newpagebooks.com New Page Books is five years old! Given its initial success, especially in the New Age field, I suspect many of you thought it was much older. We’re pleased that it has actually taken so little time to establish it as an important imprint featuring General Nonfiction, New Age, Health and Self-Help titles. We will continue to feature top authors you know-including Elaine Magee ("Tell Me What to Eat…"); Diane Warner, America’s most trusted wedding expert; Janet Farrar and Gavin Bone (Progressive Witchcraft); and Jeff Belanger (The World’s Most Haunted Places).New Page Books

proportions, one wonders what "sustainable" really means. Indeed, one begins to wonder what "living" really means or will come to mean in the opening decade of the twenty-first century. Can anything be deemed sustainable when life itself--in all its myriad forms--is threatened at so many levels? Is it enough to focus on the how-to of "green living" in the face of such overwhelming force, the "shock and awe" of forest and ecosystem destruction, the rampant plundering of the world's oceans, the terror of GMO-contaminated food, and the unintended consequences of biotechnology?
A new worldwide grassroots movement is taking shape. In India, Africa, and South America, in countries left "behind" and stripped of their resources and cultures, people increasingly feel that they have no choice: In order to continue living, they must reclaim, must lay claim to, their ecosystems, their food and water, their land and housing, their sufficiencies. It's a new kind of politics, what Arundhati Roy calls, "Not the politics of governance, but the politics of resistance. The politics of opposition. The politics of forcing accountability. The politics of slowing things down. The politics of joining hands across the world and preventing certain destruction1." It is the new, vibrant politics of sustainable living.
We wish to move the company forward boldly and with a new sense of urgency. While continuing our commitment to remain at the forefront of information about green building, organic growing, and renewable energy--the practical aspects of sustainability--we will also publish for a new politics of sustainability, for the cultural resistance that living demands of us now.
While we support one another in reducing the destructive impacts of our daily lives, we must also support one another in the daunting task of building the collective consciousness of individuals committed to a less violent way of life. We must nurture the voices of those who see ever-widening disparities of wealth, the collapse of rural economies, the hegemony of industrial agriculture, the build up of toxics in the environment and other accumulating costs of an ever-accelerating, ever-expanding economy based on material wealth.
One of the most admired and respected publishing companies in the U.S., Chronicle Books was founded in 1966 and over the years has developed a reputation for award-winning, innovative books. The company continues to challenge conventional publishing wisdom, setting trends in both subject and format, maintaining a list that includes fine art titles in design, art, architecture, and photography.
Titles of note include Martha Zamora's Frida Kahlo: The Brush of Anguish (1990), and Nick Bantock's Griffin & Sabine (1991). Originally slated for an edition of 10,000, this interactive book became the most talked-about title of the year and a New York Times best-seller for 50 weeks. The two subsequent volumes in the trilogy, Sabine's Notebook and The Golden Mean, were also Times best-sellers.
The company brought the same innovative philosophy to cookbooks with its four-color release of Sushi (1981) which sold 90,000 copies and is still in print. Chronicle Books also publishes James McNair's eye-catching cookbooks, all perennial best-sellers having sold over one million copies.
The Children's list was launched in 1988 and has published the best-selling Mama, Do You Love Me? (over one million copies in hardcover), Ten Little Rabbits (450,000 copies) and N.C. Wyeth's Pilgrims (100,000 copies). The list has grown to include not only traditional picture books but affordable paperbacks, board books, plush toys, and novelty merchandise.
In 1992, Chronicle Books launched its Gift division to develop ancillary products such as the Griffin & Sabine address book and writing box, the best-selling 52 Deck series, and a motorcycle journal and address book based on the Harley-Davidson image archives.

Coffee House Press is an award-winning, nonprofit literary publisher dedicated to innovation in the craft of writing and preservation of the tradition of book arts. Coffee House produces books that present the dreams and ambitions of people who have been underrepresented in published literature, books that shape our national consciousness while strengthening a larger sense of community.Coffee House Press was founded in 1984, and took its name from the long tradition of coffee houses as places for the free exchange of ideas, where each individual had equal time for expression, regardless of station or background. The English coffee house of the 1600s was a place of fellowship and discussion of the events of the day. The Parisian cafes of the early 1900s witnessed the birth of Dadaism, cubism, and surrealism. The American coffee house of the 1950s, a refuge from conformity for beat poets, exploded with literary energy. This spirit lives on in the pages of Coffee House Press books.

www.fantagraphics.com Fantagraphics Books has been a leading proponent of comics as a legitimate form of art and literature since it began publishing the critical trade magazine The Comics Journal in 1976. By the early 1980s, Fantagraphics found itself at the forefront of the burgeoning movement to establish comics as a medium as eloquent and expressive as the more established popular arts of film, literature, poetry, et al. Fantagraphics quickly established a reputation as an advocacy publisher that specialized in seeking out and publishing the kind of innovative work that traditional comics corporations who dealt almost exclusively in super-heroes and fantasy either didn’t know existed or wouldn’t touch: serious, dramatic, historical, journalistic, political, and satirical work by a new generation of alternative cartoonists as well as many artists who gained prominence as part of the seminal underground comix movement of the '60s. Fantagraphics has since gained an international reputation for its literate and audacious editorial standards and its exacting production values.

David R. Godine, Inc., is a small publishing house located in Boston, Massachusetts, producing between twenty and thirty titles per year and maintaining an active reprint program. The company is independent (a rarity these days) and its list tends to reflect the individual tastes and interests of its president and founder, David Godine.
At Godine, quality has remained foremost. Our aim is to identify the best work and to produce it in the best way possible. All of our hardcover and softcover books are printed on acid-free paper. Many hardcovers are still bound in full cloth. The list is deliberately eclectic and features works that many other publishers can't or won't support, books that won't necessarily become bestsellers but that still deserve publication. In a world of spin-offs and commercial "product," Godine's list stands apart by offering original fiction and non-fiction of the highest rank, rediscovered masterworks, translations of outstanding world literature, poetry, art, photography, and beautifully designed books for children.
Thank you for your inquiry. Please send a proposal only (a synopsis, a chapter-by-chapter outline and one or two sample chapters), not a full manuscript. Kensington Publishing Corp. is the last remaining independent U.S. publisher of hardcover, trade and mass market paperback books. 2006 marks our 32nd year in business. From the time our very first book (Appointment in Dallas by Hugh McDonald), became a bestseller, Kensington has been known as an astute and determined David-vs.-Goliath publisher of titles in the full spectrum of categories, from fiction and romance to health and nonfiction.
Kensington now accounts for about 7% of all mass market paperback sales in the U.S. Through the Kensington, Zebra, Pinnacle and Citadel press imprints, the company releases close to 600 new books per year and has a backlist of more than 3,000 titles.
We are considered a leader and innovator in such areas of publishing as African-American (Dafina), Gay and Lesbian, Erotic Romance (Brava), Wicca, and Alternative Health (Twin Streams) and of course romance. In the beginning of 2006 we will be launching our new erotica line in tradepaper and in an eBook format as well. We have also just started a new website called www.rebelbasebooks.com where you can find the latest books about popular culture that’s taking place on the web.
Competitive marketing strategies are Kensington's hallmark. We pioneered the use of 3-D and holographic covers, foiling, embossing and multi-colored covers for the same title—distinctive techniques subsequently adopted by other publishers.
The Kensington staff now totals close to 90 employees who take their inspiration from founder and Chairman Emeritus, Walter Zacharius. During a distinguished 50-year publishing career, he has introduced dozens of bestselling writers, and developed countless marketing innovations. Steven Zacharius, became President and Chief Executive Officer of Kensington in 2005.
Kensington boasts a dedicated sales force—men and women both in the home office in New York and in the field around the country, with their fingers on the pulse of the market. The company is able to respond quickly to trends, to put books into the hands of readers faster than larger publishers can, and to support them with targeted promotional and marketing programs to generate reader excitement.
Kensington continues to be a full-range publisher large enough to command respect in the market, yet small enough to maintain author, reader and retailer loyalty.

In 1921 Asher and Feiga (Fannie) immigrated to
America from Russia. Asher and Fannie opened a Jewish bookstore in the heart
of the New York City ghetto, at 168 Rivington Street, with living quarters
at the back of the store.
Asher was a Hebrew scholar who spoke six languages. Fannie was a liberated
dynamo who was a homemaker and spent most of her day in the business.
Nothing phased her and no task was too difficult, yet Asher and Fannie
managed to eke out a meager existence.
In 1925, Asher had an idea to manufacture a lead draydel. After a long search he found a tool and die maker who designed the world's only existing draydel casting machine. Lead is heated in a steel ladel till it melts. The molten lead is then poured into the closed mold. After 15 seconds, the lead sets, at which point the mold is opened and the hot draydel is removed. A good operator like Fannie produced about 75 draydels an hour. The first year was a great success and the exultant duo sold 25,000 lead draydel at 2 cents each, for a total of $500.00 Hallelujah! Life for Asher and Fannie was looking up.
Asher and Fannie had a dream and a goal, to build a business which would
promote Jewish education and generational continuity. How well they
succeeded! Today, KTAV is famous for its teaching devices, its scholarly
publications and its educational texts.
Asher and Fannie had two children: Sol and Bernie. Who is Who?
Today, Sol and Bernie are slightly older and are co-owners of KTAV
Publishing House.

www.mercuryhouse.org Since its founding in 1985, Mercury House has published the work of emerging American writers and critically acclaimed representatives of world literature. The house is guided by a dedication to literary values, to works of social significance, and to the free exchange of ideas. Yet its primary goal is more specific than that: Mercury House promotes authors overlooked by the increasingly commercial publishing industry centered in New York. Its publishing program serves the rich literary traditions of the San Francisco Bay Area, of the West Coast, and of world authors whose books are influential and important but do not sell in high quantities. Mercury House serves a crucial cultural and political function, filling the gap left by small independent presses that have either gone out of business or been absorbed by larger publishing firms.

Anyone who has ever tried knows how tough it is to get published in this blockbuster, celebrity, name-author world. Today the face of publishing is made up of massive conglomerates formed through buyouts, mergers, and acquisitions, with an inclination to focus on large runs with established name authors and projected "blockbuster" properties.
As a result, many extremely talented authors are abandoned or ignored altogether. Oak Tree fills this market niche, creating opportunities for authors and allowing the book buying public the power to opt for quality and diversity over celebrity.
Our mission
Our mission is to provide information, advice and resources to entrepreneurs and managers of SMEs and those who support and educate them.

As a division of Pearson Education, Peachpit is able to offer its employees a comprehensive benefits package and other advantages that come with a connection to a large, well-established company.
At the same time, in part due to our geographical separation from the rest of Pearson, we have our own distinct culture and quite a bit of freedom to organize ourselves as we like. We recognize the value of a flexible structure. We also share information among employees freely rather than just on a "need to know" basis. Our full staff meets once each month for open discussions in which we share ideas and speak what's on our minds. Our office has an open architecture and lots of artwork. Our hiring committees always include a couple of people chosen at random from the staff.

www.thepermanentpress.com
Begun in 1978 by Martin and Judith Shepard, The Permanent Press committed
itself to publishing works of social and literary merit and has, over the
years, gained a reputation as one of the finest independent presses in
America.
Since our inception, individual authors and titles have gained over 50
literary honors, including the American Book Award, Small Press Book Awards,
New American Writing Awards, and the Colorado Book Award. They have also
been National Book Award, Edgar Award, and Hammett Prize finalists. We've
published Halldor Laxness, a 1955 Nobel Prize winner, and have 12 novels in
print from Berry Fleming, who, in 1990, was a Nobel Prize nominee.
The press itself has been cited on three separate occasions for its
editorial excellence. In 1988, The Permanent Press was a Grand Prize
Finalist for The Boston Globe Literary Press Awards. In 1997 we were honored
with the Poor Richards Award given by the Small Press Center for
"having done much to advance the cause of small press publishing over a
period of at least two decades." 1998 marked the culmination of prizes,
as we won the equivalent of a publishing "Oscar" for the previous
year's list: Literary Market Place's LMP Award for Editorial Achievement - a
prize open to every publisher, large and small, in America, and voted on,
nationally, by our colleagues in the book industry.
The vast majority of our books are new, and these are published under The
Permanent Press imprint. Our sister imprint, Second Chance Press, reprints
books of merit that had been out-of-print, for at least 20 years. Under that
imprint, we've published not only Berry Fleming and Halldor Laxness, but
novels by Richard Lortz, William Herrick, and Joseph Stanley Pennell.
Unlike most publishers, we have kept almost all of our titles in print, for
we feel that these books have a timeless quality and will always be
rewarding reading experiences.
The Permanent Press also offers a book club: one title a month for a one
year period at a 50% discount, and 50% discounts to all members for other
purchases. Should this be of interest, contact us at our offices at
631-725-1101 for more details.
PERSEA BOOKS is now more than twenty-five years old. We are an independent, literary publishing house, founded in 1975 by Michael Braziller and Karen Braziller, who still own and direct the company. We are distributed by W. W. Norton and Co., and have produced hundreds of engaging and consequential books.
Our aim is to publish works that endure by meeting high standards of literary merit and relevance. We have often taken on important books other publishers have overlooked, or have made significant discoveries, whether of a single work or writer's entire oeuvre. Among these finds are the fiction of Anzia Yezierska (especially her classic feminist, Jewish immigrant novel, Bread Givers) and the opus of the distinctive modernist poet and thinker, Laura (Riding) Jackson. We also introduced the extraordinary fifteenth-century French feminist Christine de Pizan to the English-speaking world for the first time since 1621, through the publication of The Book of the City of Ladies-now required reading alongside Bocaccio and Milton in surveys of world literature at such universities as Stanford, Harvard, and Columbia. We published the first novel by Pulitzer Prize-winner Oscar Hijuelos, as well as definitive translations of major twentieth-century poets, including the Turkish poet Nazim Hikmet and the Holocaust poet Paul Celan.
Our books cover a wide range of themes, styles, and genres. We have published poetry, fiction, essays, memoir, biography, titles of Jewish and Middle Eastern interest, women's studies, American Indian folklore, and revived classics, as well as a notable selection of works in translation. In addition to the writers listed above, our roster of classic and current American and international authors includes Osip Mandelstam, Breyten Breytenbach, Carl Friedman, Earl Lovelace, Savyon Liebrecht, Jean Said Makdisi, Pablo Medina, Elizabeth Jolley, Les Murray, and Thylias Moss.

At the height of the sixties counterculture, a distinctive publishing venture emerged as an outgrowth of Shambhala Booksellers, a metaphysical bookstore that two young friends, Sam Bercholz and Michael Fagan, had opened in Berkeley, California, the year before.
"Shambhala Publications began as a sort of after-school activity," publisher Bercholz recalled years later. "Originally we just wanted to have a place where people could exchange ideas, a sort of meeting place. But a meeting place had to have some way of keeping itself going, so we became a bookstore. From the bookstore, we felt that there was information that should be passed on to a larger community than just the college community around Berkeley. So we published a thousand copies of our first book, sold around the San Francisco Bay Area."

Dear Writers:
Soho Press primarily publishes fiction, with the occasional autobiography or
cultural historical account. Completed manuscripts should be 60,000 words or
more. While many of our published works arrive here through agents, we place
a high priority on publishing quality unsolicited materials from new
writers.
Though eager to accept a wide range of literary fiction, we are generally
unenthusiastic about publishing formula fiction, young adult dramas, stock
romances, juvenile literature, cookbooks, how-to books, self-help, fantasy,
and anything that might recommend itself as a "quick read."
Further, we do not consider electronic submissions.
Writers may submit completed manuscripts at any time, however, a query
letter accompanied by three chapters of the work (preferably the first
three) and a brief outline of plot events should precede the submission of
an entire novel. A cover letter listing previous publishing credits should
be included with your work. All materials may be sent to Soho Press at 853
Broadway, New York, NY 10003, care of Laura Hruska, editor-in-chief. Please
accompany all submissions with postage and packing materials sufficient for
their return.

Editions, was founded by Charles E. Tuttle (1915-1993) in Tokyo in 1948. His
mission was to publish "books to span the East and West." In the
early 1950s the company began publishing a large number of titles on
Japanese language, arts and culture. Through a consistent emphasis on
unsurpassed quality, Charles E. Tuttle was named "Publisher of the
Year" by the American Publishers' Association in 1971. In 1983 he was
awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure by the Emperor of Japan for his
services to Japanese-American understanding. Charles Tuttle understood that
language studies would be the key to improving understanding between Japan
and the West, and he was one of the earliest and most active publishers of
books to teach Japanese to Western readers, and English to the Japanese.
Many of the books published by him received awards from the Japanese
government and recognition in the U.S. for their role in facilitating
cross-cultural understanding. Charlies Tuttle died in 1993, but his spirit
lives on in the companies that now comprise Tuttle Publishing. Tuttle
continues to provide publisher services, distribution, and fulfillment to a
select group of publishers.
Tuttle Publishing continues to grow and expand as demonstrated by a
significant expansion of the Distribution Center in North Clarendon in 1999.
The expansion included 3,000 square feet of office space and an additional
34,000 square feet of warehouse space. This brings the total Distribution
Center square footage to over 70,000 square feet.
Eric Oey, a cousin of Charles E. Tuttle, founded Periplus Editons in 1988 in
Berkeley, California and merged the two companies in 1996. With offices in
Boston, North Clarendon, Vermont, Singapore, Tokyo and Jakarta, Tuttle
Publishing has become the largest English-language book publishing and
distribution company in Asia.
www.vedanta.com vedanta is a philosophy taught by the Vedas, the most ancient scriptures of India. Its basic teaching is that our real nature is divine. God is our innermost Self, an underlying reality that exists in every being. Religion is therefore a search for Self, a search for God within. We don't need to be "saved." At worst, we are unaware of our true nature.
